Thank You For Your Service

November 11, 2008

I once had the honor of attending the Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. It was my first year in Washington, DC and I found out about it on my way to work. I begged my boss to let me have a few hours off to attend and she was kind enough to accomodate my last-minute request.

I had no idea what to expect but it was more amazing that I could have imagined. I took the metro to the cemetery and then walked toward to Memorial Amphitheater. It’s a beautiful, solemn place and more so with the Marine Honor Guard that lined the streets near the amphitheather. They stood looking so regal. As I was there by myself, I was able to slip in and find a place to stand. I watched President Clinton give a speech and then the President’s Own United States Marine Band played and as they started, the wind picked up and leaves flew around. It was magical. I can’t remember what was said, I can only remember how I felt being there; I was full of honor and respect and gratitude.

On this Veterans Day, I think of my father and Bill’s grandfather. I thank both of them, and all soldiers, past and present, for their service to our great country.

Oh how special. I love to take a day like that to think of our veterans – both my hubby, my father and all those who serve.

    Take care! =)
