Weeds And Such

March 14, 2013

Spring has sprung here in the South Bay area.  Actually, things have been blooming for about a month already.  Including weeds in my yard.  We’ve really only landscaped one part of the front of the house so that’s all I really pay attention to.  There’s rocks around the plants, but we never put liner down first so weeks pop up.  I’m paying the price for not keeping up with the weeding during the last couple of months.  Surprise, surprise, now I’m finding the job overwhelming.  I just do not like to do it.  I don’t like worms and bugs and I especially do not spiders.  YUCK.   Anyway, last week I finally decided to get started on the job.  I’m doing it in short bursts, sections at a time.  15 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever time I’ve got.  Today I finished the front of the landscaped part.  Now the “yard” area is bad.  It’s all rocks, but there’s tons of weeds there and I don’t really want to use weed killer (chemicals) and I don’t really want to pull all those weeds which won’t kill them either it will just make it look better.  I’ve still got to figure out what to do there.

Hmmm…  Which part is done, and which part isn’t?

See those green tufts in the rocks?  Weeds.  What is visible in the photo is nothing compared to what you don’t see.  But aren’t my guys cute?

And the backyard.  I can’t even stand it.  We’re going to have the backyard redone this year, but I don’t know what to do in the mean time.  It is out of control.

It’s Only 10:30

March 6, 2012

… and I am BEAT.  I so desperately want to join in here…

I so want to join them

Okay, I don’t desperately want to join in.  But it looks super tempting and I know I could sleep.   I’m definitely planning on a nap later or Bill will have to peel me off the floor when he gets home at 6.  I can feel it.  I got up at 5am for yoga.  Actually, the alarm went off at 5:07 and I thought I hit snooze so I closed my eyes and then reopened them at 5:16 thinking my alarm was about to go off but it didn’t because I had, in fact, turned the alarm OFF.  Thank goodness I woke up.  I really like the instructor which is my only motivation for getting up at that ungodly hour.  I hurried home from yoga because I knew Bill had to be at work at 9am for a meeting.  I made it home by 8, quick shower and a quick second breakfast (first breakfast was a small bowl of cereal before yoga so I wouldn’t die) and then the baby boy was up.  So he entertained me while I extracted some breast milk, and then I fed and changed him, and then he entertained me while I tried to extract some more milk and then it was time for him to take a nap.  And I am totally on my third breakfast already.  Second breakfast was an iced latte a la BillBucks and an eggo waffle with nutella.  Normally it’d be peanut butter but we ran out (gasp!).  I think the peanut butter would have stuck with me a little longer.  So I just popped some almonds and kiwi and OJ and three handfuls of animal crackers.  I think I am sated.  I make no guarantees.  I just ordered some Zone Peanut Bars because I find those filling and tasty and would be perfect for a time like this.

In between all my eating, I’ve been thinking about the yard and what I want to do with it.  The front yard needs some more plants.  And fewer weeds.

I’m thinking about a burning bush, kinda in the corner but not too far back.  I think those are pretty.  And I was thinking about some ornamental grasses along the fence.  But then I have these plants in the back that I was wondering if I could pull out and put along the fence.  They are very pretty but take up valuable real estate in the back.  Hmmm…  It doesn’t seem worth it to put regular grass here so I need something that it pretty and won’t need a lot of water.  And isn’t rocks.  Enough with the rocks already.  (The whole front yard which is unphotographed is all rocks.  Ugly.  Gray.  Rocks.)

Then there is the side yard which needs some lovin’.  It is just a hot mess right now.

Back side yard

I’d like it to be usable space.  It’s shady and could be a nice sitting area.  I’d also like to have something pretty to look at from the kitchen.  I am thinking of a couple of hanging plants on hooks and then maybe some planters like these.  And/or some ornamental grasses along the fence.  I’m big on the ornamental grasses aren’t I?  Some of the stuff belongs on the garage, some in our garden area (once we figure out where that is), and some of it would be in the sitting area.  And we have to get rid of those rocks.  I am actually using them in the front to fill in around the plants.  Until I know where the rest of the plants are going, I’m on hold.  And I’m going to have rocks left over.  So many rocks…  These are just a tiny bit nicer than the gray ones in the front.

So that’s what I’m thinking about.  I’m going to start puttering in my craft room.  I still have a ton of stuff to put away or get rid of.  I’ll work on that until the baby boy wake up for lunch.  And then I am definitely having an afternoon nap.  Definitely.

State of Chaos

November 23, 2011

I think it is pretty accurate to say that we are living in a state of chaos these days.  We officially moved on Sunday.  It took five men eight hours (of serious hustling) to get us moved over.  They moved about 95% of our stuff.  Over the past couple of days we’ve made about ten more trips, filling up Bill’s Forester with various drawers, framed things, boxes full of miscellaneous stuff…  We still have to move over our outdoor potted plants, bird bath, a few miscellaneous things still in the garage, and all our refrigerated and frozen goods.  The fridge stuff will have to wait until next week because the one we have in the garage is small and will most likely be full of our catered Thanksgiving dinner.  Our kitchen is nonexistent at the moment.  It looks like this:

The actual kitchen

We have a little station with a toaster oven and microwave.  I’ve set up a little area with our plates and various food items.  Definitely a “making do” situation for the next week.  We will kitchen cabinets next week, hopefully early next week, and then I think the kitchen will come together pretty quickly. We will be heating up our Thanksgiving dinner at the old house tomorrow and bringing it back to eat.

The rest of our "kitchen"

Part of "the kitchen"

Almost all the boxes were put into what will eventually be my craft room and the garage.  And the garage was already about half full with appliances and various things the contractor needs for the house.  There’s a few boxes in the different bedrooms, but not that many so we still have room to maneuver and get things set up.  We need to spend some time this weekend getting the box room in order.  I think it will be at least ten days before any of the kitchen stuff can be unpacked, and my craft room is the lowest priority.  We need to get those boxes in separate corners of the room so that we can address everything else.  But even in our bedroom, we are in a bit of a holding pattern because we aren’t get the house insulated until December 9th and the attic access is in our closet.  We don’t want to load up the closet only to have to unload the stuff for the workmen to get access, or even worse have that stuff get insulation residue on our clean clothes (or any of my shoes!).

Thank goodness my dad has been here because he’s been a huge help.  He was on his hands and knees helping us get the floors ready the night before we moved in (so much construction dust!), packing boxes, moving boxes around, etc.  He was originally going to help Bill do the attic insulation but after some thorough research, we decided it would be better to have someone else do it.  There’s other “little” jobs around the house that we can have him help with.  There’s no shortage of things to be done!  We have agreed to take a day this weekend to get out of the house and do something fun and non-housing related.

The animals have been super through the move.  It’s going to be a tough couple of weeks for them as the workmen are here finishing up the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room.  That’s right, I don’t think I’ve mentioned that the main bathroom is still under construction, though the shower and toilet work, but no sink yet.  We’ve been sharing the teeny tiny bathroom in the master suite.  Chaos, I tell you!

I think that in a few weeks we will look back at this and laugh.  Right now, I just want to crawl under the covers and take a nap!
